Humpus Bumpus Bookstore in Cumming to Host a Raising Kids Who Read Author Event

On Sunday, August 28, from 1:00-4:00 p.m., the Humpus Bumpus Bookstore at 703 Atlanta Road in Cumming, Georgia will be filled with local authors – both children’s and adult’s – for book readings, book signings, and interactions with kids and adults alike. Well known local authors like 11-year-old Sarah Voskamp, children’s picture book authors Cheryl Campbell, Lisa Kelley, and Jackie Gaskins,  juvenile/adolescent book writer J.R. Hardin, and couples therapist and relationship author Barbara J. Peters,  will be among the local celebrities at the event. Atlanta area illustrator Lauren Keel will be a part of the event as well – sketching and demonstrating what it takes to illustrate a book.

One of the “stars of the show” will be JoJo the Moustached Parakeet who is the main character in the book The Lonely Parrot, which was written by his “momma” and owner, Lisa Kelley. JoJo can be quite “chatty” at times, so kids may get a chance to hear him speak as well as to get “up close and personal” with the bird, and learn some valuable lessons on pet ownership at the same time.

Attendees will also have a chance to speak with new authors whose books are still in the pre-publishing stages like R.E. Munzing, author of Beyond the Firefly Field, seventeen-year-old Amberle Cianne, author of Nightmare in Niceville, and Anna Everhart, author of the upcoming children’s picture book, Bearful Bear and His New Moves.

The event is being sponsored by Boutique of Quality Books Publishing Company (BQB) as a part of their Raising Kids Who Read™ program that was created to focus on helping teachers and parents bring (or emphasize) the joys of reading into the lives of children of all ages. Startled by the statistics from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that “It is estimated that more than $2 billion is spent each year on students who repeat a grade because they have reading problems,” BQB wanted to do something, and their Raising Kids Who Read™ program was created.  According to publisher, Terri Leidich, “Meeting people who are passionate about writing and who have written books we can hold in our hands, helps people of all ages get more excited about reading .”

Humpus Bumpus is a locally owned independent bookstore that has been in Cumming for many years.

Georgia Publisher Announces Raising Kids Who Read Program

Boutique of Quality Books Publishing Company, an independent publisher located in Cumming, Georgia, announces the release of their program Raising Kids Who Read.

“As a company of writers working for and with writers, we are all passionate about bringing the joy and adventure of reading into every child’s life,” states publisher Terri Leidich, “and this is our way of helping and supporting parents and teachers in that endeavor.”

The nationwide agenda includes bringing authors into schools to read their books and talk with kids of all ages about the process of writing, whether the visit is in person or via Skype or Google; events with booksellers around the country where parents and children can meet and interact with authors and illustrators; sales and special programs through booksellers and via their online store www.shop.boutiqueofqualitybooks.com; an educational writing and publishing program for schools; webinars for parents with ideas to help them get children of all ages immersed in the fun and wonder of reading; and writing contests to encourage and support writers of all ages.

“Books have the ability to bring entertainment, information, and ideas into young minds, while at the same time engaging their imagination and expanding and challenging their thoughts and perceptions,” says Leidich. “It doesn’t matter if they read a printed book or a Kindle, Nook, or iBook version, the important thing is that we give children the opportunity to learn to love books and the way they can enhance their lives.”

Raising Kids Who Read™ events that include book readings, book signings, interactions with local authors, visits with local artists who illustrate children’s books, along with information sessions for parents on how to encourage kids to read are currently scheduled for August 28th at the Humpus Bumpus Bookstore in Cumming, Georgia and November 19th at the Blue Elephant Book Shop in Decatur, Georgia.

Boutique of Quality Books (BQB) was founded in 2010 from a writer’s perspective to bring author support, guidance, and encouragement into the publishing realm. They offer both printed books, which are available through Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Books A Million, and bookstores all across the country, plus ebooks through Kindle, Nook, and iBooks.
